History of Hot Spring Bathing

Soaking in hot water, especially with water from naturally occuring water, has been a tradition for more than a millenia.

Ruins of Roman baths have been found since antiquity.

We know of city of Bath in England, famous for being a retreat and recupate center.

Iceland hot spring is famous, as well as Baden in Germany.

Closer to Asia, Japan has brought the art of hot spring, or onsen, to another level. Governed by strict certifications of water quality, classification of types of onsen, Japan has collection of natural hot springs and associated ryokans fueled by its volcanic-rich topography and its culture of hospitability.

Hot springs and bath houses can be found in various countries in Asia, including China, Korea, and Indonesia.

The earliest hot springs in Japan were documented in the imperial annals:

Ikaho onsen, in Gunma, is said to be found 1,300 years ago.
